AI Breaks Authentication: Who Is Responsible For It?

You created the tools that will break this. Are you responsible for it?

Hey, GonzoBankers. Tony DeSanctis back with another hot take. I wanted to touch on AI breaking authentication.

For those of you who missed it, Sam Altman just did a panel interview where he talked about the fact that what we have used for authentication, including voice, selfies and things like that, is essentially being broken by AI.

Now, his position on it is, “We as OpenAI haven’t released software that will break it, but bad actors have the ability to break it now.” So you have to change your authentication strategy.

If you are using selfie-type authentication or any kind of voice authentication, you really do want to take a deeper dive into how you can potentially enhance that.

He mentioned passwords probably still being one of the most secure ways, which is crazy.

And we can get into the discussion about whether or not, you know, you break it, you bought it. Sam, you created the tools that will break this. Are you responsible for it?

But I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

So I think the key takeaway for you and I, as folks working in the financial services space and even in other spaces, is how are we going to modify the authentication processes we go through so that AI manipulation isn’t going to be able to game those systems?

We all know what the challenges are around fraud, and obviously these authentication tools are going to be critical to that.

But I do think that voice, video, pictures and things like that that we’ve historically used for authentication are going to become more and more challenging and probably less and less effective over time.
