Hey, GonzoBankers. Tony DeSanctis here to talk about the GENIUS Act. Is it smart? Let’s talk about it.
The GENIUS Act is designed to put a regulatory framework around stablecoins, stablecoin issuance and management. The key to this is that it’s going to put a regulatory framework around the existing stablecoin providers, but also provide a regulatory framework for financial institutions should they decide they want to get into the stablecoin business.
So why is stablecoin important? Stablecoin is another payment method that presents an opportunity for new currencies. By having the U.S. take the lead on stablecoin legislation, or being open to this, it ensures that the U.S. dollar maintains its position as the dominant currency in the marketplace.
So, as a country, it’s important that U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoins maintain their dominant position.
For individual financial institutions, where it’s important is understanding our position and making sure that we have a position in the stablecoin market, whether that be partnering with the existing stablecoin providers or large institutions generating and creating their own stablecoins.
Money movement is going to change drastically over the next few years, whether that’s real-time payments, card innovation or stablecoins. Making sure that we, as financial institutions, keep our position in that payment stream is going to be critical.
Stablecoins will be a key part of that, and the GENIUS Act will put a framework around which banks and credit unions can be a part of that innovation.
